GSI Linux accounts

Applying for an account

Normally Linux accounts are created together with GSI Windows accounts, so if you have a Windows account or a mailbox on GSI's Exchange server, you most likely already have a Linux account. If not you can apply for one by filling out the form http://www.gsi.de/accounts.

Passwords

In case you have forgotten your password it can be reset by GSI User Help Desk. Normally you have to go there directly and bring your passport/ID. If you cannot stop by in person, please send an email to accounts-service@gsi.de to negotiate possible procedures for password resets.

If you just want to change your password, follow the PasswordHowto.

Users and groups

Every account belongs to exactly one primary group. Additionally it may be member of multiple secondary groups.

id reveals which groups a user belongs to.

The primary group may be temporarily changed by using newgrp group -- or sg group -c command for a single command invocation. If there is a password assigned to a group, also accounts not explicitly listed as a group member may change to this group. newgrp will then ask for the group's password.

For permanent changes of the primary or secondary groups please email accounts-service@gsi.de.
