Information for new PhD Students
If you are a new PhD Student at GSI there are a couple of things you should do regarding * PhD Students at GSI* in general.
- You should subscribe to the phd-all mailinglist. You can do so on the GSI listserv. The mailinglist has a volume of on average 1 mail per day. It is your only chance to get official announcments from GSI (as in: "Tomorrow there will be no electricity in building X" or "The owner of the car DA-XY 123 has 30 minutes to remove it before it gets towed".) On top of that you get PhD-related announcements regarding life and working conditions in the lab.
- You should be aware who your current PhD-Representative is (2014 it's Pradeep Ghosh). If you have trouble with the graduate school (being at GSI you will probably be enrolled / soon be enrolled in HGS-HIRE), your scholarship or the like you can ask him for mediation. If you encounter problems that you think come from a general problem with GSI or the graduate school or their rules he would also the person to ask for help in changing these rules.
- If you want to contribute to PhD-students social life, organize events like a PhD Barbequeue or help improve scholarship conditions, there is a lose group of people working as a docteam at GSI. They will be willing to help you, and they meet roughly every few months. You can reach them and join them by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org. You can find a short (sometimes outdated) text about them here. They are called Helmholtz Juniors after the central student representation HelmholtzJuniors in the Helmholtz society.
- If you have any questions about student life at GSI, you can also contact email@example.com
