Introduction

The Information Technology (IT) Department provides the general computing infrastructure of the Laboratory as well as dedicated services for physicists, engineers, administration and management. The Department also develops and deploys the Grid computing infrastructure for the LHC experiments, leads the large EU-funded EGEE project reaching well beyond particle physics, and is involved in several other related projects. IT collaborates closely with industry (through the CERN openlab for DataGrid applications) to develop advanced computing solutions and to enable IT technology transfer in both directions.

To provide its services, the IT Department relies primarily on commercial sources, but develops in-house solutions if and when necessary. To maintain the quality of its services, a key strategy of the Department is to develop the technical competence of its staff, recognizing that skill sets must be continuously adapted to a rapidly evolving technological environment.

The Grid Deployment Group (IT-GD) is responsible for coordinating the LCG and EGEE grid operations, and the integration, certification and testing of grid middleware.
