Installing medm locally for the Gsi wide installation of Epics. Here is the description of how I did it:

Before installing medm you have to install the extensionsConfig (andOrMaybe extensionsConfigure). Therefore download and unpack extensionsConfig_20040406.tar.gz and extensionsConfigure_20040406.tar.gz in the directory of your choice (??).

Type: "tar -xvzf extensionsConfig_20040406.tar.gz"

Now download medm3_0_3.tar.gz and unpack to (?? must this directory be the same ??).

Type: "tar -xvzf medm3_0_3.tar.gz"

Now do the epics login. This must be done everytime ??. It sets the environment variables EPICS_HOST_ARCH, EPICS_BASE and EPICS_EXTENSIONS. They should be (or at least were on my account): EPICS_EXTENSIONS=/usr/local/pub/debian3.1/gcc335-13/epics/extensions EPICS_BASE=/usr/local/pub/debian3.1/gcc335-13/epics/base EPICS_HOST_ARCH=linux-x86

It also adds $EPICS_EXTENSIONS and $EPICS_BASE to your PATH environment variable (?).

Type ". /usr/local/pub/bin/epicslogin" (important: leading dot and blank!)

Though the login set these variables, the makefile will not recognise this, because it calls ~extensions/config/CONFIG_EXTENSIONS, which calls ~extensions/config/RELEASE, where EPICS_BASE=/usr/local/iocapps/R3.14.5/support/base/3-14-5-asd1. So you have to change this line to EPICS_BASE=/usr/local/pub/debian3.1/gcc335-13/epics/base.

Now change to ~extensions/src/medm and type: "make".

You should be able to run medm, but make sure to start the medm you installed just now (and not a previous installation of someone else).

Type: "~/extensions/bin/linux-x86/medm" or add this path (~extensions/bin/linux-x86/) to your PATH environment variable above other entries of potential medm installations. Then you can just type "medm" anywhere (?? really anywhere) in the file system.
