Configure the License Manager

There are two modes for obtaining a license. You may use a floating license (called Unmanaged Concurrent license) or a license for exceptional cases.

The default mode is the floating license. A floating license is issued automatically by the network license manager on the GSI campus, when a user on the GSI campus starts the NI software on his or her computer. It does not matter, if the user is GSI staff, student or guest. The computer of the user might be a owned by GSI or, as in the example of a guest or a student working at GSI, a personal notebook. However, the computer must be registered and connected to the GSI network following the procedure required by the IT department.

Obtaining a Floating License

Using LabVIEW with a floating license is the default way of licensing on the GSI campus. Please do the following.
  • Start the "NI License Manager" on your local machine.
startLicenseManager
  • Go to Options --> Preferences.
gotoPreferences
  • Configure the preferences to use the network license server "srvFlexLMHFSS.gsi.de:28001".
NIVLM 3.1 License Manager Configuration

After that, you should be able to use installed NI software.

Obtaining a License for Exceptional Cases

Obtaining an exceptional (non-floating) license requires the fulfillment of certain conditions. The conditions and terms are listed here.

Using Existing Installations with the Network License Manager

In order to configure a computer for NIVLM that has NI software already installed, you might consider backing up the contents of E:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Licenses first.

LabVIEW 8.2 or newer

  • Delete all files in E:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Licenses, and
  • follow the procedure to configure the license manager (from the top of this page).

LabVIEW 7.1

  • Ask HolgerBrand or DennisNeidherr how to get rid of the local registration, and
  • follow the procedure to configure the license manager (from the top of this page).

Problems or Comments

In case of questions please contact HolgerBrand or DennisNeidherr.
In case of problems with the NI License Server you should send a trouble-ticket to the Windows server colleagues.
