MEDM was started by Mark Anderson at Argonne in 1990. It was originally partially based on the two programs, DM (Display Manager) and EDD (Edit Display), which had been developed at Los Alamos. These programs used the X library directly. MEDM handles both the construction and running of displays and has a Motif interface.

synApps is a collection of software tools that help to create a control system for beamlines. It contains beamline-control and data-acquisition components for an EPICS based control system. synApps is distributed under the EPICS Open licence.
