CSS - Control System Studio - A New Operator Toolkit

Operator working on EPICS operator consoles are mostly still working with applications which do not really suit the state of the art of operator tools. X-Window programs are difficult to maintain and do not provide state of the art functionalities. The above describes the initial reasons to start a new development at DESY. Even though the development was initiated by an EPICS site, the new design is targeted but not limited to be used in an EPICS environment. The Control System Studio (CSS) is designed to be used in heterogeneous environments. The interface to the control system protocol - the Data Access Layer (DAL) - is open for multiple implementations. Several implementations are already available. CSS itself is designed as an Eclipse based RCP application. The pluggable approach eases the seamless integration of new applications regardless whether they are written at DESY or by one of the partners in the growing international CSS development collaboration.
The presentation will explain the core CSS design. Existing migration paths will be shown. The focus will be given to the most prominent CSS plugins like the new synoptic display, the alarm tools, the archive browser, the provided authorization mechanism and many more.

CSS is available under EPL(Eclipse Public License). CSS source code is available from the open cvs repository at DESY. The CSS Web site (http://css.desy.de) describes how to load CSS from the DESY update site.
In order to get prepared for the planned hands on session after the presentation please download the latest CSS beta release from: http://css.desy.de/content/e413/e1289/index_eng.html

Hands-On session, please note: please bring your own Laptop with you.
